Frequently Asked Questions
- How should I prepare for a treatment? (return to top)
- You should eat a light meal within an hour or two of your treatment. Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Does acupuncture hurt? (return to top)
- Most people report at most a mild pinch (like a bug bite) as the needle is inserted, and many feel nothing at all. Some people feel a mild tingling or dull heaviness with certain points. Most patients report a feeling of deep relaxation and some even fall asleep during the treatment.
- How many treatments are necessary? (return to top)
- It depends on the duration, severity and nature of the condition and your response to the treatment. In some cases, one or two treatments are all it takes. It is generally suggested that you have at least 2 to 4 treatments in the first 2 weeks and evaluate your progress at that point. The goal is to get you to the point where you are coming in only periodically to maintain and promote overall wellness or when a new injury or illness occurs.
- Is acupuncture covered by insurance? (return to top)
- Many health insurance plans and auto policies cover at least part of the cost of acupuncture treatments for certain conditions. You should contact your insurance company to find out what, if anything, is covered. You may be eligible for reimbursement under a Health Savings Account in situations where the acupuncture treatment isn’t covered or is subject to deductible. Beth can discuss this with you in more detail and can either bill your company directly or provide you with a receipt for reimbursement.
- What are the side effects of treatment? (return to top)
- The National Institutes of Health has found that “one of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted medical procedures used for the same condition”. The most common side effect is occasional bruising at the site of needle insertion.
